As Himalayan Glaciers Melt, A Water Crisis Looms In South Asia!

By Kids of RMB

The seasons shifted early this year. Spring came really early in the high mountains of Gilt-Baltistan in Pakistan.

Record temperatures in this mountain range caused the melting of the Shisper Glacier. This glacier could be found in the mountain range. This rapid melting created a lake that burst through an ice dam! Because of the breakage of water, all of that water flooded the valley and cities below the mountains damaging fields and houses! This flood wrecked 2 power plants and washed away parts of the highway which spawns from Pakistan and China.

Pakistan’s climate change minister who is Sherry Rehman tweeted videos of this destruction that occurred. According to him, High global temperatures are energizing the rate of melting of these glaciers. This is melting the glaciers causing floods!

Over a decade ago, not that much was known about the Hindu Kush Himalayas. These mountains separate all of the countries from the Indian subcontinent. Research says that the Himalayas which have some of the highest peaks in the world formed when there Indian subcontinent(India) collided with Asia and that force caused the Himalayas to form.

Let’s stop global warming to stop melting and flooding glaciers to make the earth a better place to live!
