How did a Medellin neighborhood transform from a piece of junk to a thriving place?

By Kids of RMB

Many people are enjoying the beautiful climate in this small community but let’s go back to the 1980s and learn the dark secret of this neighborhood! It once used to be a landfill and it ruined the whole neighborhood with all of the trash! In 1970 as the city expanded with trash, Many people left this Medellin neighborhood in Columbia and they relocated to the west of Medellin. Local authorities also designated Moravia as the site of a municipal landfill and it turned into a rubbish heap! Every day, about the weight of a Boeing 757-200 airplane was dumped on the site! That is so much trash!

The landfill closed in 1984 and then families got together and made a beautiful and vast community that everyone can enjoy! Before it was a piece of junk and now, it is a growing environmentally friendly community! They built houses out of recyclable materials such as cardboard, plastic, etc. They also sell plants to people! Many tourists come to these cities to look at the vast transformation for 30+ years!

This clearly shows that we can transform our earth as well if we have the required willpower. It’s time to ACT now. Let’s collectively make our earth a better place to live for generations to come!!
