Let’s talk about the New Smart Roof!

By Kids of RMB

Scientists have created an all-season smart roof coating that keeps homes warm during the winter and cools during the summer without consuming any natural gas or electricity generated from coal. This means that this invention will naturally keep homes warm and cool without using fossil fuels. Research reported in the journal Science point to a groundbreaking technology that outperforms commercial cool roof systems in energy savings.

“Our all-season roof coating automatically switches from keeping you cool to warm, depending on outdoor air temperature. This is energy-free, emission-free air conditioning and heating, all in one device,” said Junqiao Wu who is a faculty scientist in Berkeley Lab Materials Sciences Division and a UC Berkeley professor of materials science and engendering who led the study.

Today’s cooling roof systems such as reflective coatings, membranes, shingles, etc, have light-colored or darker colored surfaces that cool homes by reflecting sunlight! It is just like solar power and solar panels. These emit solar heat as well as thermal infrared radiation. This process is when thermal infrared light is radiated away from the panel’s surface!

Dar-Lon Chang, you should probably look at this article because it could probably be a great addition to GEOS Neighborhood!

Everyone, please do check out GEO’s Neighborhood if you live in Denver or Arvada CO! They are really making a difference in making the earth a better place to live!! Thank you so much, Dar-Lon Chang!! Let’s collectively make our earth a better place to live for our future generations to live!
